Make your spare room into a comfy guest room in 7 easy steps
Have you ever stood in the door to the spare room, with your guests standing behind you, bags in tow, when you suddenly realize that you should have tidied up before flinging the doors open for all to see? Or maybe your Mother-in-Law has made comments about how difficult it is to maneuver around the boxes, laundry baskets, and office work you’ve been meaning-to-organize-but-just-never-got–around-to-it ?
If this is you (or someone you know,) I have some quick and easy tips to make preparing for visitors a snap.
- FRESH & TIDY: Put fresh towels out in the bathroom (with extras stacked neatly on the bed so guests don’t have to rummage through drawers looking for them.) Put a new box of tissue on the bathroom counter, and put a fresh roll of toilet paper on the roll (and one extra within reach so guests can easily help themselves.)
- SHOWER POWER: Add some shower gels, soaps and bath items to the shower and the sink areas in the room. These are items that people forget to pack most often, and I like to make sure our guests have the items that any hotel would provide (I keep extra hotel soaps and lotions from our travels just for this purpose)
- FLUFFED & CLEAN: Make sure all bed linens are freshly washed and the pillows are pillow-y (not flat) and comfy. If you have pets (cats especially) use a sticky lint roller to get any kitty hair off of pillows and bedding. You get extra Feng Shui points if you do something thoughtful like leaving a welcome note on the bed for your visitors, or a fresh flower on the night stand in a pretty little vase.
- LET IT FLOW: Sunlight is a natural room freshener, as is fresh air. Open windows and draperies and welcome the outdoors in!
- CLEAR THE CLUTTER: This is Feng Shui 101; clean the bookshelves of extra knickknacks, and self-help books (put the relationship rescue books in the garage!) and make some space in the closet for your guests clothes. Adding a few hangers for their clothes is especially thoughtful!
- SPEND A MOMENT: Spend some time in the room, and try to think of yourself as a guest in the space. Check the remote control for the television and make sure the batteries work; test the bed side lamps and make sure the bulbs are bright. Leave a nice book on the bedside table for your guest to flip through during their stay.
- SOMETHING SWEET: Treating your guests to a special in-room treat sets the tone for a happy visit and guests that feel well-provided for. I always leave a little dish of candies in the room (I like individually wrapped mints or candies so they stay fresh and yummy)
BONUS TIP: Take a few moments before your guests arrival time to set your intentions for the visit. I repeat this phrase to myself before my guests knock at my door “My home is filled with joy, happiness and love. I look for the best in every moment with my guests”

Creating “pockets of emotion” can super charge your Feng Shui
* see examples of how to create simple “pockets of emotion” in your home or office that can support a positive mind-set
* create a space that feels more personalized, and more like ‘you.’
This morning I am preparing for a Feng Shui consultation with a gal that attended one of my Feng Shui vision board workshops. She was, and is, what I would consider a “Feng Shui newbie.”
I love working with this sort of client because they have a Tabula Rasa mindset or a ‘blank slate’ mindset when it comes to Feng Shui. They tend to be open to the enhancements and positivity that Feng Shui can bring to their environment without holding a lot of negative pre-conceptions about just what Feng Shui is, or is not.
Without divulging too much of her personal story, she has told me that the reason she needs a consultation is because she lives in a home that makes her feel “stuck, depressed, fearful and overwhelmed with the work it would take to fix the home’s issues.”
In preparation for our time together, I have decided to do a little slide show on my Ipad (love my Ipad!!) to demonstrate a technique I am going to recommend for her home for creating “pockets of emotion”.
In my own home, I support my positive intentions and mind-set by enhancing the every-day messages that surround me. This is simply working with the LAW OF EXPECTATION; simply put~ those who look for miracles get them; those who look for something less get that.
Here are some examples:
This Irish blessing plaque is placed right above the door bell. Anyone who visits can read my positive message for my home before they step through the door!

Create meaning in everyday settings by adding items that support you. A simple pillow on the couch faces visitors as they enter my living room
In the kitchen, I have created a pocket of emotion that symbolizes happy moments in my life. Who says the kitchen is just for appliances?!
Using book shelves to display special mementos, and cherished family photos as well as your favorite books is a great way to develop “pockets of emotion” in your home office.
Celebrate your journeys and travels by grouping your favorite maps, photos and artwork your collected like this (plus it makes for great conversation!)

I hope you have some fun putting together some special groupings of well-loved items in your home, and creating your own “pockets of emotion.”
